How to Get Your Permit
Information on taking the NJ driver's test:
The test consists of 50 questions chosen out of 300. There are no two test alike & it is all computerized. It is all multiple choice, 4 answers-a good rule to follow would be to do the ones that you know for sure first & go back to the others later..
This is the first step to getting your permit.
You must be at least 16 years of age to take behind the wheel to learn to drive, but passing this test is #1.
- To drive at 16, there must be a driver of at least 21 with a license for at least 3 years in the car with you (this is the supervising driver).
- Driving must not be between the hours of 11:01 p.m. & 5:00 a.m.
- There can not be anymore than one additional person, other than the supervising driver or anyone sharing the same address.
- Everyone must be wearing seal belts or child restraints.
- Driver may not use any interactive wireless communication device while moving unless it's an emergency.
For ages 17+, you can get your provisional license if you pass the permit stage & 6 months supervised driving.
- Driving must not be from 12:01 a.m until 5:00 a.m., unless religious authority or employer signs a written waiver. *If driver is 21 or older, they do not have to follow the hour limitations. Other passengers in the vehicle are still limited to one other person....see age 16, unless driver is 21 or other passengers are 21.
- At this stage, there is no supervising driver required.
- All passengers still must wear seat belts or child restraints & may not use any interactive wireless communication device while moving, unless it's an emergency.
Ages 18-21 — To acquire your regular drivers license, you must have completed at least one year of unsupervised driving.
